Georgian Technical University (GTU) is the first university established in Georgia and one of the most important international universities due to its rich history and high teaching efficiency in various engineering disciplines.

Overview of Georgian Technical University:

Georgia Technical University (GTU) is one of the oldest universities in the country, founded in 1917 by the Russian Emperor. It was the first institution of higher education in the Caucasus region. In 1922, the Applied Technical College was established at the Government University of Tbilisi. The departments of the Applied Technical College were merged and made into an independent college, named “Georgian Polytechnic Institute (GPI)” in 1928.

In the 1970s, more colleges were integrated into the university, making it composed of 15 full-time colleges and 13 part-time colleges. The Applied Technical College ranked first among higher education institutions in the Soviet Union during 1985-1987. During this period, the college became the largest higher education institution in the Caucasus region, accommodating a total of 40,000 students and 5,000 faculty members.

In 1990, the Georgian Applied Technical College obtained university status and was renamed Georgia Technical University. In 1995, GTU gradually started implementing new training standards, offering a credit system of 120 British credits, as a result of curriculum reforms and restructuring at the university. In 2005, eight colleges were created due to the restructuring operations conducted at GTU.
